S&C Handling Tools provide convenient, easy operation of S&C fuses, cutouts, and disconnects, as well as those of other manufacture. Each tool consists of a detachable fitting specifically designed for a particular handling operation, which is attached to a universal pole. When required, a pole extension can be connected to the universal pole. S&C Handling Tools offer easier engagement, surer grip, and simpler handling motions than conventional tools. Some can perform operations not possible with conventional tools.

The design of each S&C Handling Tool reflects extensive operating experience. Each has been field-tested to demonstrate that it offers the best possible performance for a particular task. Loadbuster®—The S&C Loadbreak Tool is a light-weight, easy-to-use loadbreak tool that brings load-switching capability to fuses, cutouts, and disconnects.

Each fitting provides the ideal solution to a particular handling problem. But you’re not necessarily burdened with a “special purpose” tool. Wherever possible, S&C fittings have been designed to at least adequately handle other kinds of equipment. This multi-purpose functionality in no way compromises the primary use of the fitting.

Large Round Socket

The Large Round Socket is specifically designed for handling SMD-2B, SMD-2C, and SMD-3 Fuse Units in ratings through 69 kV. It incorporates features that make replacement of these fuse units simple and convenient from the ground.

The socket is first attached to a universal pole of the correct length for the particular installation. The release tube of the fuse unit is then inserted in the socket, where it is securely held. The fuse unit effectively becomes part of the pole; there’s no cantilever loading to contend with, and the fuse unit can’t jiggle or fall out.

After the fuse unit has been seated in the hinge on the fuse mounting, the socket can be easily disengaged from the fuse unit. Next, a pole extension is attached to the universal pole. Then, using the prong on the socket to engage the pull ring, the fuse unit is swung upward to the fully closed position.

Removal of a fuse unit is easy too. Just reverse of the procedure outlined above.

Small Round Socket

The Small Round Socket is specifically designed for handling SMD-1A Fuse Units in ratings through 69 kV. It incorporates features that make replacement of these fuse units simple and convenient from the ground.

Grappler™

Grappler is specifically designed for installing and removing fuse holders, fuse units, and switch blades in S&C indoor distribution fuse mountings. It’s ideal for SM-20 and SM-4Z Power Fuses rated 25 kV and below, SML-20 and SML-4Z Power Fuses, and Fault Fiter® Electronic Power Fuses. Grappler also doubles as an effective fuse opening and closing tool.

Grappler’s cushion-grip coated prong provides a non-slip grip. It offers the perfect balance and ready control that operating personnel appreciate when removing and replacing fuses in metal-enclosed switchgear and pad-mounted gear.

Talon™

Talon is a high-strength, two-pronged fitting designed for overhead distribution systems. It’s used for installing and removing SMD-20 Power Fuses, Type XS Fuse Cutouts, Fault Tamer® Fuse Limiters, and TripSaver® Dropout Reclosers. Talon can also be used to open and close disconnects and interrupter switches.

Talon’s curled prong provides an upward slope that keeps the fuse from sliding off the end of the hookstick (especially “extendo” sticks). The curled prong features a unique straight section that properly orients the fuse during installation in the mounting.

Talon’s straight prong, which is made to the configuration and dimensions set by ANSI for distribution switch sticks, provides a flat surface that is used during fuse-closing operations.

Station Prong

The Station Prong is a high-strength, heavy-duty fitting intended primarily for use in outdoor substations, for opening or closing power fuses and station-type disconnects.

It works well with Disconnect Style SM-4 and SM-5 Power Fuses, SMD-20 and SMD-40 Power Fuses, Type XS Fuse Cutouts, Loadbuster Disconnects®, and Single-Pole Heavy-Duty Style Alduti-Rupter® Switches. Moreover, the Station Prong can perform a wide variety of emergency handling functions in the absence of fittings specially designed for the applications.

Distribution Prong

The Distribution Prong is a conventional tool dimensioned to ANSI standards, suitable for operation of overhead distribution cutouts and disconnects. It’s not recommended for use with station type disconnects or power fuses other than S&C Type SMD-20 and SMD-50 Power Fuses.

The Distribution Prong is especially handy for carrying on utility line trucks because it can be used on any universal pole. There’ no need to carry a conventional hookstick.

Locking Prong

The Locking Prong is especially suited for handling outdoor Non-Disconnect Style SM-4 and SM-5 Power Fuses, plus indoor Non-Disconnect Style SM-4Z Power Fuses rated 25 kV and below, SM-5S Power Fuses rated 13.8 kV and below, and SM-5SS Power Fuses. It can also be used to open and close outdoor disconnects and interrupter switches.

This sturdy fitting has an integral cradle that engages and steadies the lower edge of the fuse lifting eye. A deep notch in the prong prevents slipping.

Large Clamp

The Large Clamp is also suitable for removing or installing the fuse units of outdoor Type SMD-40 Power Fuses.

The cushion-grip coated jaws of the clamp are opened and closed by rotating the universal pole, and can be preset by a spline lock to any position up to 45 degrees from the axis of the pole.

Extra Large Clamp

The Extra-Large Clamp is expressly intended for installing and removing the holders of Fault Fiter® Electronic Power Fuses rated 4.16 kV and 13.8 kV. It provides sure, positive control, and is particularly useful when the mounting is waist high or higher.

The cushion-grip coated jaws of the clamp are opened and closed by rotating the universal pole, and can be preset by a spline lock to any position up to 45 degrees from the axis of the pole.

Univeral Poles

S&C Universal Poles and Pole Extensions provide sure, steady handling of S&C power fuses, cutouts, disconnects, and interrupter switches, as well as those of other manufacture. They’re constructed of a fine-weave, unidirectional, electrical-grade fiberglass laminate applied to a unicellular foam core, and are finished with a hard-gloss, porosity-free epoxy sealer. Each is furnished with a standard universal splined head, fitted with stainless-steel cap screw, washers, and nut. Where two fittings are required to complete a particular handling job, the Double-Head Style Universal Pole is recommended.

S&C Universal Poles and Pole Extensions are 50 percent stiffer and several times stronger than wood. They last longer than wood too, and they have better electrical properties and higher resistance to moisture absorption.

The entire length of every S&C Universal Pole and Pole Extension is tested at 100 kV per foot for five minutes in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Standard 1926.951.
